Purification practices to move from darkness to light

This December, I am committed to leading uplifting practices that eliminate tamas (darkness) and uplift the spirit.

In light of the longer nights and the turmoil in the world, I will create experiences that nurture and comfort the body, mind, and spirit.

What will these practices entail?

On Saturdays, we will break down the Sun Salutations, also known as Surya Namaskar, to learn each step and stage of the poses, allowing us to eventually perform them in a fluid sequence.

We will also focus on additional poses that support the practice of Sun Salutations. My goal is for our yoga classes to serve as a source of nourishment, using yoga as medicine to enhance our lives.

We will continue to practice the Gayatri Mantra at the beginning of our Saturday classes.

What does the Gayatri Mantra do?

Spiritually, the Gayatri Mantra is a powerful tool for awakening and expanding consciousness.

It is considered a prayer for wisdom and enlightenment, invoking divine light to illuminate the practitioner’s intellect.

The deep spiritual resonance of the mantra fosters a sense of connection with the higher self and the universe.

How do Sun Salutations benefit us?

In yoga, we work with the gunas: tamas, rajas, and sattva.

I will introduce teachings on the gunas as we enter December.

Through purification practices, we can move from darkness to light. Different yoga practices, such as Sun Salutations, can help lift tamas (darkness and regression), ease rajas (activity and desire), and elevate sattva (light and intelligence).

With these practices, Sun Salutations can foster a sense of inner peace and emotional balance, improve mental clarity, reduce stress and anxiety, physically create heat, improve digestion, enhance cardiovascular health, and increase strength and flexibility.
